In one of many great conversations with Gubbiotti this weeked, he commented on the innate cynicism of the French. I found confirmation in an article about chef Bernard Loiseau; his biographer Rudolph Chelminski says:

"The French have enormous faith in [the Michelin Guide]," says Chelminski. "French civilization ... is now cynical. There's no faith in the church, everyone assumes politicians are corrupt and spouses cheat. Michelin is the one national symbol of unimpeachable rectitude."

Oh, the irony... that the only group I can think of that is more cynical than the French is the Bush administration...
