I escaped from the asylum this morning and checked out the shows at Hemphill and G.

Jeff Spaulding's show had lots of da-glo plastic, but the big surprise was a group of small, delicate constructions in the far corner.

I've heard good stuff about John Watson's work, but hadn't seen it until today - an installation in the micro-space at Hemphill. 1) it is the subsconscious of the Cushner painting that it is 'inside of'; and 2) he correctly predicts the future in a way that artists like Sarah Sze don't: it's not gonna be plastic, neo-Tokyo blobject design, it's gonna be folktronica lumber and yarn reorganized in interesting ways by a wireless net of embedded RFIDs.
